Film School Taught Me...

I’ve seen talk on forums about whether film school is worth the time and money. The debate over film school or no film school. Experience or classroom learning.

For me I think film school was the first move. I think that I would have learned many of the techniques that I was taught in school, but it would have taking me longer than four and a half years to learn. I am not a reader, as my wife would tell you. I learn best buy experience. By attending film school, I had much more opportunity and greater access to professional equipment than I would ever had without film school.

The art of filmmaking is by nature a collaborative effort. Attending film school brought me and hundreds of other people to a place where we could work together and network. As they say, its about who you know, not what you know. Filmmaking is a lot like family. Being comfortable and trusting the people you are working with is an important part. Everyone relies on everyone else to be reliable and hardworking. At the end of the day filmmaking is a business. To make a product and make money with that product.

Film school taught me so much. More than I could have ever learned with my high school buddies making films all summer long. There is so much to say about what film school taught me. Too much to put in a blog. Or at least one post.

I say film school is worth it.
